CSUSB Celebrates Academic Success Center Opening

This fall, CSUSB Athletics opened its first-ever Student-Athlete Academic Success Center on campus and the official ribbon-cutting ceremony took place as part of Homecoming 2018.

The Center provides a dedicated study space for student-athletes and access to academic services such as tutoring, advising, peer mentoring, supplemental instruction, among many others.  It previously served as a multi-purpose room and was graciously dedicated to Athletics by CSUSB Special Events & Guest Services.

“We take very seriously the notion that our student-athletes are students first,” CSUSB Director of Athletics Shawn Farrell said.  “When I approached President Morales and Cabinet with the idea of an academic home for our student-athletes they were immediately on board.”

All the technology in the room, including computer workstations and an overhead projector, was funded with Student Success Initiative fees through the VETI Grant.  The room is adorned with CSUSB Athletics Branding.

“Student-athletes are the role models of this university,” CSUSB Provost Shari G. McMahan said.  “This center provides everything you can imagine for academic support.”

The room is open to all CSUSB student-athletes, which placed 26 members on the CCAA All-Academic list last year, which requires at least a 3.40 GPA.

“To have an academic success center framed around the lives of student-athletes is monumental,” CSUSB Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Vice President and women’s basketball and track and field member Tehya Burroughs said.  “This is just one of the many steps we are taking as a Pack to better ourselves and those around us.”
