Cal Poly Cross Country Logs Second Top 10 Finish

The Cal Poly Pomona men’s cross country team strung together their second top 10 finish of the season, claiming seventh place at the University of California Riverside Invitational on Saturday morning.

Brittan Reed led the Broncos with a time of 26:02.1 to finish 30th overall out of 234 athletes on the 8,000-meter course.

Following closely behind in 31st was Jeremiah Suzara, clocking in at 26:02.9 while Oscar Soto finished in 26:09.5 to take 36th overall.

The Broncos cross country team moved up in the national rankings this week, coming in at 6th overall according to the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. CPP finished first overall two weeks ago at the CCAA Preview meet in their first top 10 performance.

The next meet for CPP takes place on September 30 as they travel to Sacramento State for the Capital Cross Invite.

Women’s Cross Country

Turning in their second straight top three finish of the season, the Cal Poly Pomona women’s cross country team took second overall at the University of Riverside Invitational recently.

The Broncos claimed second-place, finishing behind only Division I University of Arkansas. CPP finished ahead of CCAA opponents Stanislaus State, Chico State and Cal State San Marcos. Out of the 275 athletes that participated, CPP claimed five athletics in the top 25.

Lorraine Fernandez ran the top time for CPP, finishing 11th overall with a performance of 17:52.9 on the 5,000-meter course.

Casey Monoszlay finished just behind Fernandez in 12, running a time of 17:53.3 while Elizabeth Hernandez and Samantha Barajas took 14 and 15 overall with times of 18:01.0 and 18:02.3 respectively.

Rounding out the top five for CPP is Samantha Aguilar who claimed 22 in the race with a mark of 18:13.1.

Volleyball

The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team bounced back recently, picking up their first California Collegiate Athletic Association win of the season as they defeated San Francisco State 3-1 (25-23, 25-16, 25-27, 25-18) to split their opening weekend of conference play.

Andrea Bosnic led the Broncos (5-5, 1-1 CCAA) with a match high 13 kills, tallying her fifth double-digit kill night of the season. Following her was Jenna Goldsberry who had her most efficient night of the season, collecting 10 kills on 18 swings.

Tied 17-17 in the opening set, CPP scored three straight points to pull away before closing out the set with three more consecutive points, taking an early lead in sets.

Desi Martin totaled nine kills while adding 10 total blocks on the night while Ally Wilder finished with five blocks of her own along with four kills.

As a team, CPP finished with an attacking percentage of .235, holding the Gators to a percentage of .189.

In the second set of the night, the Broncos held San Francisco State to a hitting percentage of only .097 while boasting a percentage of .333 of their own. After jumping out to a 7-2 lead, CPP secured the set victory with a 10-2 run midway through to earn a 2-0 advantage.

Alina Smith finished with night with 24 assists, collecting her fifth 20-plus assist night of the season. In the back row, Alexandria Bollier totaled eight digs while Bosnic and Smith finished with seven and six respectively.

In the fourth and final set of the night, CPP once again strung together a series of points, breaking away from a 9-11 deficit with seven straight points before winning 25-18.

The Broncos continue conference action next weekend as they hold their home opener in Kellogg Arena after 10 straight matches on the road on September 22 at 7:00 p.m.
