Rename Riverside Post Office After “Woodie” Rucker-Hughes Becomes Law

Rep. Mark Takano (D-Calif.) released this statement after President Trump signed H.R. 5983 into law, legislation Rep. Takano introduced to designate the facility of the United States Postal Service located at 4150 Chicago Avenue in Riverside as the “Woodie Rucker-Hughes Post Office Building.”

“I am thrilled that my bill to rename the Riverside Post Office after the irreplaceable and unforgettable Woodie Rucker-Hughes was signed into law,” said Rep. Mark Takano. “Woodie was an icon in our community, and I was lucky enough to call her a dear friend. She was committed to working on the issues that impact all of our lives, and her tireless efforts truly made our community a better place. Naming a local post office after an iconic leader of Riverside’s Black community is a small gesture to ensure that her legacy is never forgotten, and that our district is always inspired by the life she led.”

Woodie Rucker-Hughes was a history teacher at John W. North High School and an administrator for the Riverside Unified School District, and she also served as the NAACP Riverside Charter President. Woodie passed away in 2018.
