Winfred Davis Breland, a long-time businessman in San Bernardino, died January 14, 2012.
Winfred “Wint” was born May 4, 1921 in Wiggins, Mississippi, one of six children. He graduated from Stone County Training School in Wiggins. He served in the
U.S. Army during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1946 and worked at the Colonial Bread Company in Gulfport, Mississippi. He married the former Bernice McQueen in 1947.
The family relocated to San Bernardino and he worked as a mechanic for the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Barstow for 30 years until his retirement in 1977. He received the Federal Service Award for 30 years of service to the U.S. Marines. He was a member of American Legion Post 701 for 22 years.
The couple owned and managed two Richfield Service Stations, one on Ninth Street and the other on Highland Avenue. Always aspiring of owning a chartered bus company, he began the Breland Lines in 1957 and transported workers to the Marine Base in Barstow and chartered frequent trips to Las Vegas and other destinations.
A member of St. Paul AME Church in San Bernardino, he served as a deacon and trustee, often using his Breland Lines to transport fellow church members to functions.
Called “Wint” by his wife and WD by many others, he was always there for others in their time of need.
Wint is survived by his wife of over 65 years, Bernice, and his children Winifred Jr., Diane Cauley, Sophia L. Garrett, Jackie, Roland Everard, Florence Marie Stewart, Kevin Maurice and Dr. David Jerome; brother, Harold Breland; sister, Jessie Pearl Johnson, and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his daughter Gayle Denise Breland.
A celebration of life was held on Wednesday, January 25, at 10:00 a.m. at Westside Christian Center, 785 N. Arrowhead Ave., San Bernardino, followed by interment at Riverside National Cemetery. Bobbitt Memorial Chapel handled arrangements.
