Thirty-seven students in the San Bernardino City Unified School District’s class of 2010 successfully challenged themselves with college-level coursework to earn International Baccalaureate (I.B.) and Advanced Placement (A.P.) diplomas.

During the August 4 meeting, the Board of Education recognized 25 Cajon High School graduates from the class of 2010 who earned

an International Baccalaureate diploma. Cajon is one of only two District schools to offer the International Baccalaureate (I.B.) diploma program.  The International Baccalaureate Organization (I.B.O.) awards I.B. diplomas.
The Cajon I.B. graduates were Jose Alvarez, Sergio Avila, Sarah Blood, Donna Campbell, Aaron Chamberlain, Stephanie Chavez, Sakari Dixon, Amanda Fitzpatrick, Reyna Flores, LeAnna Harrison, Abbas Hasan, Sharan Kohli, Niala Lessard, Vanessa Mejia, Jordan Nesbit, David Ngo, Natani Notah, Dajanae Palmer, Erica Polley, Veronica Ruvolo, Jaime Lou Sabellon, Alexandria Schmidt, James Stallworth, Aaron Sulaeman, and Rangel Zarate.
I.B. is an internationally recognized curriculum that develops critical-thinking and problem-solving skills while maintaining high expectations for academic success. To earn an I.B. diploma, students must demonstrate mastery in six subject areas, complete an extended essay and the Theory of Knowledge course, and participate in creativity-, action-, and service-related activities, such as team sports and volunteering in the community.
For the second time, the Board of Education also presented Advanced Placement diplomas to graduates who passed five or more A.P. exams.  The District began the program during the 2008-2009 school year to recognize students who challenge themselves by mastering college-level material in multiple subject areas.
The College Board’s Advanced Placement program encourages high school students to complete college-level coursework in approved, high school A.P. classes.  Students may take A.P. exams in a variety of subjects to demonstrate their mastery of the material and possibly earn college credit.  The District’s Board of Education, not the College Board, granted the A.P. diplomas.
Although all comprehensive District high schools offer A.P. courses and exams, San Gorgonio High School was the first school to graduate students with A.P. diplomas in 2009.  San Gorgonio also had the most A.P. diploma recipients in the class of 2010.
San Gorgonio High’s nine A.P. diploma recipients were Nicholas Destasio, Jasmine Gutierrez, Alfredo Hernandez, Andrea Mejia, Andy Nguyen, Trang Nguyen, Adrian Preciado, and Ronald Phan.  San Bernardino High’s A.P. diploma recipient was Scott Baker, and Arroyo Valley High School’s A.P. diploma honorees were Jose Jacquez and Richard Moreno.
As with all District graduates, A.P. and I.B. diploma recipients must meet the graduation guidelines set forth by the San Bernardino City Unified School District’s Board of Education and pass the California High School Exit Exam to earn a diploma.
