Cajon Wins, Sets Sights on Colton

The San Andreas League is made up of San Bernardino City teams, except for one school, with Colton being the outcast.

But now it seems that it is that renegade that stands in the way of the Cajon Cowboys’ quest to win the CBL title.

Many had predicted that it would come down to those two teams to see who gets bragging rights and the all-important number-one league seed come playoff time.

More than likely that top team will face a third seed in the first round of the CIF playoffs, avoiding a tough team from the beginning.

The Cowboys (5-2, 2-0) jumped out to a 14-0 lead over San Gorgonio and never looked back in their most recent win. The Spartans did add on 10 points in the second quarter to make it interesting, but Cajon added another six to be in a comfortable position.

Thirteen points in the last quarter made it even easier as QB Thomas Carter ran wild for over 150 yards and had only to throw the ball a couple of times. Running the ball seems to be the style in the SAL, with many teams opting for the running game, many times the QB being the runner.

Another example of this is Arroyo Valley’s QB Mike Yearwood running for two touchdowns himself in a 68-7 win over San Bernardino Pacific. Yearwood recently had a great individual showing in a loss to Colton. Arroyo Valley beat Pacific 68-7 in their most recent game.

Bloomington still is looking for the right formula as they lost again, this time to Riverside Patriots 33-7.

The fifth loss in a row put the Bruins at 0-2 in the Sunkist League while the Patriots improved to 1-1 in league play. Daniel Green led the Patriot attack with over 120 yards in rushing.

Neighboring cities Redlands and Yucaipa went at it in a Citrus Belt League game and the Redlands’ running game proved to be too much.

Five touchdowns from back Cameron Villalobos was enough for Redlands as the Terriers (6-1, 4-0) kept pace with city rival Redlands East Valley in the hunt for the league title.

He will be at USC next year, but for now Anthony Brown will do his business at Fontana Kaiser. His Wildcats downed Norte Vista 31-8 in a Sunkist League game.

Brown ran for 165 yards and the Wildcats improved to 2-0 in Sunkist League play, where for many of the past seasons the Wildcats have been the league favorite.

Riverside La Sierra came in with a quality record of 4-2 against Rancho Verde, but things changed quickly as they were taken over after a 77-0 loss against Rancho.

Rancho, one of the top teams in the Inland Empire area, is now 7-0.Running back LaRon Jackson had two long touchdown runs in the effort. Along with Centennial and Norco High Schools, Rancho is making a name for themselves and the IE as top CIF contenders.

Other area results include highly ranked Rancho Cucamonga falling to Los Osos 31-28; Centennial downing North 52-20; Colton continuing San Bernardino’s problems in a 41-7 win; Redlands East Valley beating Rialto 49-6, and Riverside King winning over Corona 15-7.
