Ghana Last African Hope at World Cup

The ups and downs of the 2010 World Cup seem to never end as more of the giants of the game have been swept aside.

Gone are Italy and France. Both teams were in the 2006 finals, with Italy winning over the French. Portugal, also a quality team, has also been eliminated by favorite Brazil.

Landon Donovan did his part for the USA, but it was not enough as Ghana, the only remaining African team, went overtime to beat the USA in dramatic fashion. Asamoah Gyan ended the American dream.

Soon after, Mexico went out against one of their most hated rivals, Argentina.

The 3-1 defeat against Coach Diego Maradona’s team was due in part to Mexico’s early mistakes. Maradona added that his team is “not on vacation” as Argentina is a serious contender to win the World Cup. They have not won the World Cup since 1986 and the fans are waiting. Concerns overSouth Africa’s ability to run the World Cup have fallen away so far. The only thing really missing is the host nation team. Ghana will try to make up for that hole.

The World Cup has also drawn in a slew of worldwide stars, including many sports stars from the United States.

Kobe Bryant, who grew up in soccer-crazy Italy, since his dad played pro basketball there, was a spectator for a USA game. He said he would like the sport to “be more promoted” in America.

Also taking in the action was NBA star Dwayne Wade, who already has a foundation on the continent. Hollywood was also represented with the likes of Michael Douglas, who also claims to be a soccer fan.

Knockout rounds continue this week with Spain and Brazil still favorites, but so far South Africa is still the winner.
