Ron Brown Receives Award

A stunning professional dancer in his own right, Ron Brown has performed with such
ron-brown
notable companies as the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Alvin Ailey II, Dianne
McIntyre's Sounds In Motion, UCLA Dance Company, JazzAntiqua and Malathi Iyenger & Rangoli Dance Company. A supremely gifted teacher, he has spent a distinguished career dedicated to the enrichment of the next generation of dancers and dance makers.

Ronald began training in classical ballet studying at the Ballet Russe of Cleveland, the Akron Chamber Ballet and the School of American Ballet. Later, he explored the modern disciplines of Jose Limon, Martha Graham, and Lester Horton. Presently, Ronald has found the joy of movement in West African Dance under the guidance of Nzingha Camara. Read more...

30th Anniversary Silver Rose Weekend

The Jenesse Center celebrated its 30th Anniversary Silver Rose Weekend.  The special fundraiser launched with the Silver Rose Gala & Auction at the Beverly Hills Hotel.  The theme for this year’s event was “In A Perfect World.” The event was chaired by Academy Award winning actress Halle Berry. The event raised funds for Jenesse Center, a nonprofit organization that provides holistic, comprehensive programs to nurture families victimized by domestic violence back to a place of mental, financial, physical and emotional well being.

Flair for Fashion: Singer Macy Gray has decided to jump back into the fashion industry. The artist has revitalized her fashion line for plus-size women called “Humps.” The line will be released next year. Gray put out a similar clothing line in 2008 that didn’t sell very well, but she claims that she has been “re-inspired” since her appearance at the Esprit store in New York City last month. The line will not only be designed for plus-size women, but will also be a fit for voluptuous women. There is conversation that Gray will be looking for her spokesmodel with a reality TV show. Gray’s clothing line creation follows the lead of other black female advocates for plus-size clothing. Fighting Back:
According to The Associated Press, Jay Z and one of his business partners filed suit this month in Manhattan Federal Court against Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz, claiming that a nightclub opened by Big Papi in his native Dominican Republic infringes on Jay’s 40/40 club concept. The $5 million suit accuses Ortiz of naming his Santo Domingo club Forty-Forty--a reference to 40 home runs and 40 stolen bases in one season--in hopes of drafting off the popularity of the chain of 40/40 clubs owned by Jay in New York, Las Vegas, Chicago and Atlantic City. (Ortiz has stolen only 10 bases in his career and is not a member of the elite 40/40 club of baseball players.)

Doing Her OWN Thing: Oprah Winfrey’s new network, OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network, unveiled programming for its Jan. 1 launch. The lineup includes Oprah’s Next Chapter, featuring Winfrey “getting untethered from the chairs, opening up her world and taking you with her,” the network said in a statement. Winfrey fans can expect “a whole new kind of Oprah show” that will feature “riveting conversations with the people we all want to hear from, in some very unexpected places,” from the “Taj Mahal to [Winfrey’s] beloved oak tree, the Great Wall to her own teahouse,” the statement continues.
