Herbie’s Life Story: Popular award-winning jazz musician Herbie Hancock is getting ready to pen a memoir expected to be released in 2014. “Quincy Jones is a dear friend of mine and he keeps saying to me, ‘You’ve got to do a book,’” Hancock said Tuesday during a telephone interview with the AP from Shanghai,
where he is currently on tour. “I’ve had a life that has taken many interesting paths. I’ve learned a lot from mentors who were instrumental in shaping me and I want to share what I’ve learned.” The groundbreaking jazz player, who just turned 72 last week, is a winner of 14 Grammys and is known for his creative style of mix of jazz, blues, soul, funk and electronic music. The book will be in part about his spiritual journey as a Buddhist and beyond. He’ll also discuss, of course, music and life. “I am hoping this book will not only appeal to jazz fans,” he said. “Being a musician is not what I am, it’s what I do,” he explained.
Using Stardom for Good: Singer Charlie Wilson is using his celebrity status to bring awareness to prostate cancer. A survivor of the disease, the singer wants to send a message to African American men, alerting them of the issue through a national campaign, M.A.P. (Making Awareness a Priority) about prostate cancer and its disproportionate impact on the African-American community. With the highest incidence of prostate cancer of any race in the U.S., African-American men are 2.4 times more likely to die from the disease than Caucasian men. “When I first learned I had prostate cancer, I thought my career was over. I thought it was a wrap for me,” said Wilson, but his wife quickly proved to be his greatest supporter. “My wife stood tall and told me we were going to get through it. You just have to have a positive heart and go on. That’s what we did and now I want others to know about the resources that are available to them.”
