AddThis Social Bookmark Button
On Saturday, May 8, the Orange County Food Bank collected 270,000 pounds of food from 24 Orange County post offices that participated in the National Association of Letter Carriers’ (NALC) Food Drive.  For 18 years, letter carriers nationally have organized America’s largest one-day annual Food Drive on Mother’s Day weekend.  The letter carriers pick up donations of food from people on their delivery route as they deliver the mail on that day.  This year, the letter carriers celebrated a milestone. They have exceeded collecting over one billion pounds of food over the 18-year history of the NALC Food Drive. Read more...

Somehow, tackling issues of social justice head-on always seems to carry its own special force that keeps the community in tune with what’s really important in life, like tireless service, compassion, and dedication to the cause.

Those are the words colleagues use to describe Tri-County Bulletin’s own social reporter, Jacqueline Johnson, who is being recognized this week for her many facets of public service and years of volunteerism.

The Orange County Human Relations Commission will show appreciation for six local achievers who have worked hard using their time and talents to end hatred, and create awareness within their communities.

On Saturday May 8, the Orange County Food Bank, a program of Community Action Partnership of Orange County (CAPOC), along with food banks across the country are partnering with the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) in an effort to “Stamp out Hunger.”  Local Letter Carriers will be picking up non-perishable food donations left at mailboxes and deliver them to local food banks, including the Orange County Food Bank.  Volunteers will then sort through the food, prepare boxes to be distributed to local charities and food pantries that help hungry families with children, seniors and low-income persons throughout the community.

Orange County AIDS Walk

Maybe it’s all those years of laxity around the dangers of unprotected sex, or maybe it’s just that information overload has made people immune to the message of HIV/AIDS. Unfortunately, they are not becoming immune to the disease.

Just when everyone felt it was safe to play, recent data shows HIV/AIDS is on the rise again. It’s not looking very good for people of color.

As striking as the numbers are, Barbara Lohman, with the AIDS Family Services, said the publicity around the disease isn’t as urgent when it first surfaced.

Southern California Edison (SCE) and Southern California Gas Co. (The Gas Company) have teamed up during the continuing economic crisis to provide help for customers having trouble paying their utility bills.

As soon as customers recognize they may have problems paying their bills, they should contact SCE or The Gas Company to help avoid disconnections and fees that may be required to restore service.

“We are trying to help our customers in need, including those who are unemployed and those having difficulty paying their bills,” said Hal D. Snyder, vice president, Customer Solutions, The Gas Company. “We strongly encourage customers to call us before their account is overdue and learn about the available assistance programs we offer.” Read more...

Diamonds are a girl’s best friend, which may be true for some girls, but not all.

More accurately, diamonds are to die for in Sierra Leone, the resource-rich region at the root of raped and pillaged villages, and the torturous war that had left over 50,000 dead by 2002.

There, for those who posed a threat of voting against domestic players who upheld the blood diamond stronghold, the best way to politically silence their vote of opposition was simple – cut off the hand.

Today, the Afrikaans are living maimed, and in squalor as the macheted victims of the blood diamond conflict. In some areas, that conflict continues, while in their own backyard, the clay dirt is filled with countless diamonds in the rough.
