On Saturday, May 8, the Orange County Food Bank collected 270,000 pounds of food from 24 Orange County post offices that participated in the National Association of Letter Carriers’ (NALC) Food Drive.  For 18 years, letter carriers nationally have organized America’s largest one-day annual Food Drive on Mother’s Day weekend.  The letter carriers pick up donations of food from people on their delivery route as they deliver the mail on that day.  This year, the letter carriers celebrated a milestone. They have exceeded collecting over one billion pounds of food over the 18-year history of the NALC Food Drive.

“The letter carriers provide an amazing service,” said Kristin Kvesic from the Orange County Food Bank.  “Their Stamp Out Hunger campaign provides substantially more food to us than any other single activity from which we benefit throughout the year,” concluded Kvesic.

The Orange County Food Bank distributes nearly 20 million pounds of food each year to vulnerable people.  Nearly 400 other charities rely on the Food Bank for the food they distribute.  Those organizations include churches, senior centers, shelters, community centers, and social service agencies.  Those charities feed seniors on fixed incomes, disabled individuals, the unemployed, homeless persons, and the working poor.  The Food Bank also feeds 1,400 people directly each day in communities throughout our county.  For more information on the Orange County Food Bank, log onto www.ocfoodbank.org.
