Young Inland Empire Volunteer

Jacqueline Reliford, a 4th grader at Salinas Elementary School in San Bernardino, is one of the youngest volunteers at PAL Center and has been helping the younger children there for almost a year. She wrote a letter to Michelle Obama and her daughters. She asked about the White House, about the Obama daughters and drew a picture of President Obama.

Leaders Honored by NAACP

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Riverside Branch will honor 13 community leaders at its 60th annual Freedom Fund Awards and Scholarship Dinner on May 6. The event will take place at 5:30 p.m. at the Riverside Convention Center, 3443 Orange Street, downtown Riverside. Keynote speaker will be Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge David Cunningham, and words of inspiration given by Bishop Lacy K. Sykes, Jr. of Crossword Christian Church.

San Bernardino Fitness Challenge

Governors’ Council on Physical Fitness and Sports Chairman Jake Steinfeld (Body by Jake), elected officials and school district representatives kicked-off the San Bernardino County Fitness Challenge at Arroyo Valley High School last Thursday.  The top three school prizes in the Governor’s Challenge Competition are $100,000 fitness centers; eleven regional awards of $6,000 each are awarded to Regional Award winners.  Last year 339,000 Californians participated in the Challenge.

The Spirit of Peace Awards

Attending the Spirit of Peace Awards, held at the Annenberg Conference Center in Santa Monica, and receiving recognition during the ceremony for their vital roles in confronting the problems of youth violence in the Inland Empire were:  Margaret Hill; Sheila Futch (representing Assemblymember Wilmer Amina Carter); and Brenda Dowdy. First Time Homebuyers: Home Loans

Not many areas in the state have suffered the foreclosure housing bite like the Inland Empire.

To help ease the local crisis, the NID Housing Counseling Agency recently partnered up with the  San Bernardino Economic Development Agency and the Inland Empire Concerned African American Churches to pave the way for  new low- to moderate-income buyers to get into their first home.

Over the weekend, certified HUD counselor Linda Jackson said the government-run Freddie Mac sponsored auction at the Riverside Convention Center was a huge success. Most everyone got the house they came to bid on.

SCE Utility Bill Discounts

Southern California Edison (SCE) and Southern California Gas Co. (The Gas Company) have teamed up during the continuing economic crisis to provide help for customers having trouble paying their utility bills.

As soon as customers recognize they may have problems paying their bills, they should contact SCE or The Gas Company to help avoid disconnections and fees that may be required to restore service.
