Thru July 1 – Two highly anticipated exhibitions featuring a wide array of culturally relevant artwork beginning with Visual Rhythms, which runs through
July 1, and Promises of Freedom: Selections from the Arthur Primas Collection, which runs through September 2. Visual Rhythms features paintings, collages, prints, quilts and other textiles. Promises of Freedom showcases 74 of the 600 pieces from Arthur Primas’ personal collection featuring paintings, sculptures and works on paper and cover 150 years of Black culture, dating back to the Haitian Revolution. The exhibitions are free and open to the public at the California African American Museum, 600 State Drive, Exposition Park, Los Angeles.

May 18-20 – The city of Torrance hosts its 53rd Armed Forces Day Celebration and Parade. On Friday, the Air Force Band of the Goldenwest will perform free concerts at 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. at the James Armstrong Theatre, 3330 Civic Center Drive.k Tickets are free on a first come first serve basis with a limit of 4 tickets per adult. Contact the Box Office at 310-781-7171. The parade will be held on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. beginning at Crenshaw Blvd., going west on Torrance Blvd. and ending at Madrona Avenue. On Sunday, military exhibits will be on display from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Del Amo Fashion Center in the lower parking lot to the west of the Lifestyle Wing parking structure.

Freedom Socialist Party – A weekly study group on the history of the U.S. Black struggle explores the origin and nature of racism. Meetings will be held on Monday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Solidarity Hall, 2122 W. Jefferson Blvd., Los Angeles. Registration is $2 per session; snacks served at 6:30 for a modest donation. American Red Cross – The Greater Long Beach Chapter has many community disaster preparedness programs available free to congregations and faith communities. They would also like to work with congregations to prepare their facilities for emergency sheltering. The Red Cross has temporary housing, food and clothing resources and referrals for victims of fire or other disasters. Monthly Disaster Service Volunteer meetings. Call (562) 595-6341.

Jewish Family Service of Orange County offers a new program titled Jewish Big Friends-Little Friends to provide positive mentors and role models to children in need. Big Friends provide friendship, understand, companionship and guidance in a stable relationship with the Little Friend.

4950. A discussion group focusing on issues, concerns and responsibilities of adult children for their elderly parents meets first and third Tuesdays from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.. Fee is $10 per person for each session. Pre-registration required. Also, support and discussion group for women over 50 every Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. Group addresses issues of menopause, anxiety, depression, relationships, loneliness, family, more. Also, a co-ed men and women’s support and discussion group meets Tuesdays at 7 p.m. to address similar issues as the Wednesday women’s meeting.
