Thru July 1 – Two highly anticipated exhibitions featuring a wide array of culturally relevant artwork beginning with Visual Rhythms, which runs through July 1, and Promises of Freedom: Selections from the Arthur Primas Collection, which runs through September 2. Visual Rhythms features paintings, collages, prints, quilts and other textiles. Promises of Freedom showcases 74 of the 600 pieces from Arthur Primas’ personal collection featuring paintings, sculptures and works on paper and cover 150 years of Black culture, dating back to the Haitian Revolution. February 12 – A lecture, “The Holocaust of Enslavement Period,” is the second in a series on the four model periods of Black history. Presenter is Dr. Maulana Karenga, professor and chair, Dept. of Africana Studies, CSU Long Beach. On February 19, “Reaffirmation of the Sixties-Meditating on the Meaning and Historic Forward Movement of the ’60s,” will be presented. February 18 – The Santa Ana Black Historical Society presents a tribute to individuals for their leadership and community service. Those honored include Dr. Fran Williams, Mark Gombar, Mrs. Nellie Berry and Donald Drake. The event will take place from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. at Southwest Community Center, 2201 W. February 24 – Award winning documentary, “Freedom on My Mind,” will be screened at 7:00 p.m. at Solidarity Hall, 2122 W. Jefferson Blvd., Los Angeles. The feature length film brings to life the 1960-1965 Mississippi Voter Registration Project with the story of local sharecroppers led by women like Fannie Lou Hamer and young civil rights organizers, black and white. Strategy session on how to save and extend the vote will follow film showing. A winter buffet, with vegetarian option, will be served at 6:30 p.m. for an $8.00 donation. American Red Cross – The Greater Long Beach Chapter has many community disaster preparedness programs available free to congregations and faith communities. They would also like to work with congregations to prepare their facilities for emergency sheltering. Jewish Family Service of Orange County offers a new program titled Jewish Big Friends-Little Friends to provide positive mentors and role models to children in need. Big Friends provide friendship, understand, companionship and guidance in a stable relationship with the Little Friend.
